Gothenburg (SE), June 2020 - Weret watches entered the market this year and has already received a UX Design Award nomination (#UXDA20), from the global competition for user and customer experience organized by the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ). The world’s first connected watch for surfers pioneers the way to stay up to date with weather and surf conditions by showing real-time surf data with just a glance on the wrist, powered by magicseaweed. And this glance is on an analog interface which makes this timepiece even more unique.
Weret’s five dials give different options to configure according to consumer preferences. This way it is possible to have at hand two themes: Wave, that shows swell height and direction, and Wind, that brings up wind speed and wind direction. For extra information such as air temperature and tide flow, all that needs to be done is to press the crown of the watch and it goes from Time Mode to Weather Mode. These are just some of the features that gave Weret the UXDA20 nomination in the category “Product”, being selected among projects from 34 countries.
“Our watch focuses on surfing enthusiasts whether they are passionate amateurs or top-notch professionals. We aimed to create something exceptional and not just another activity tracker. That’s why we engaged surfers in product development. So, to already be nominated for a UX Design award in 2020 is an honor and also a sign that we are moving in the right direction”, says Weret’s founder and automotive designer, Joel Rozada.
Technology and design
Inside the Weret watches is a co-engineered smartwatch movement made in collaboration with Switzerland’s leading movement manufacturer. The result is the revolutionary use of the second hand of the watch as a Bluetooth™ antenna that enables smartphone connectivity, through an exclusive app.
The design is inspired by the Scandinavian automotive industry, presenting modern and sophisticated lines, and highlighting an iconic tide on the main dial. Designed for the surfer lifestyle, Weret is made to last beyond the season, using top craftsmanship and materials such as 316L pure surgical stainless steel - with excellent corrosion resistance to sea water - and anti-scratch and anti-reflective sapphire glass on the watch face.
The watches hit the market in May, and are available to purchase online at weret.com, coming in three limited editions: Weret Clean in black or white, Weret 612 in rose gold or brushed stainless steel and Weret Blue which highlights the surf elements and the tide in the color of the seas. The straps are available in three different materials: leather, canvas, and silicone. Also following the surfer's lifestyle, they come with a quick-release system, making it easy to swap according to the occasion.
The UX Design Awards are a global competition for user and customer experience organized by the IDZ. The list of former winners reads like a who-is-who of the industry. This year’s nominated solutions cover a very diverse range of fields of application, such as health and care, mobility, communications, media, arts and entertainment, public services, IoT, finance, agriculture and industry, human resources and education. The Award comprises three competition categories: “Product” and “Concept” for the professional sector and the “New Talent” Award for young designers.
The jury of renowned experts has tapped 102 projects to compete and will now proceed to select winners. Due to the pandemic, this year the award ceremony will happen virtually, later this year and all nominated solutions will be presented to the public in an online exhibition.
